A+ A-

Our organization BAMRO participated in the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of Iraq at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva. This event took place over five days, from January 27, 2025, to January 31, 2025.

Since our organization holds consultative status with the United Nations (Economic and Social Council), it contributed to the UPR session on Iraq for a week. Our organization presented a report highlighting gaps in certain laws and proposed necessary reforms.

Our representative held several meetings with the Iraqi Minister of Justice, Dr. Khaled Al-Shwani, as well as with several civil society organizations in Iraq. These meetings focused on discussing various human rights issues and encouraging Iraq to uphold its commitments, treaties, and protocols signed with the United Nations.

Our organization submitted a report to the UPR committee, pointing out legal shortcomings in Iraq's counterterrorism law. We called for addressing these legal gaps, which contradict the human rights principles Iraq has committed to.

Our organization closely monitored the recommendations made to the Republic of Iraq, urging the country to benefit from and implement them. A special acknowledgment was also extended to the Iraqi delegation in Geneva for successfully organizing this event and for the detailed report submitted.
