Iraq After the Elections: Human Rights Challenges and Opportunities

Analytical Statement by the Belgian Association for Human Rights and Development (B.A.M.R.O)
Brussels – November 2025

In its latest report, the Belgian Association for Human Rights and Development (B.A.M.R.O) offers a balanced human rights analysis of Iraq’s post-election landscape, entitled “Iraq After the Elections: A Human Rights Perspective on Challenges and Opportunities.”

The report notes that the calm following the elections does not necessarily indicate full stability, but rather an opportunity for gradual reform based on human rights, accountability, and transparency.
It highlights that this stage provides a vital moment to rebuild public trust, strengthen civic participation, and promote constructive dialogue.

The report focuses on five main areas:

  1. Public Freedoms and Media: the need for a safe and professional media environment that upholds freedom of expression.

  2. Empowerment of Women and Youth: recognizing women and youth as the foundation of reform and progress.

  3. Justice and Displacement: promoting transitional justice and reintegration of displaced persons.

  4. Environment and Sustainable Development: treating the environment as a human right, not a secondary issue.

  5. Civil Society and Partnerships: reinforcing trust and cooperation between civil society and institutions.

As an organization with consultative status at the UN ECOSOC, B.A.M.R.O reaffirmed its commitment to working with partners in Iraq, the Middle East, and Africa to promote human rights and sustainable development.
