International Day of Democracy 2025: Artificial Intelligence between Opportunities and Human Rights Risks

A+ A-

September 15 marks the International Day of Democracy, which the United Nations has dedicated this year to: Ensuring effective governance of Artificial Intelligence.

While AI offers opportunities for progress and innovation, it also poses serious challenges to fundamental human rights: mass surveillance, manipulation of information, violations of privacy, restrictions on freedom of expression, threats to the right to protest, and risks to fair trial guarantees.

Potential violations include:

Infringement on the right to privacy.
Curtailment of freedom of expression.
Restriction of the right to peaceful assembly.
Threats to the right to a fair trial.

The role of human rights organizations like the Belgian Association for Human Rights and Development (BAMRO):

Advocating for clear international regulations on AI use.
Exerting international pressure to protect fundamental freedoms.
Documenting AI-related human rights violations.
Providing legal support to victims.
Launching awareness campaigns to inform the public.

Our vision: AI must serve humanity rather than control it. BAMRO calls for the establishment of an independent international monitoring mechanism to ensure AI remains consistent with international human rights standards.
