BAMRO Responds to ScreenBox’s Invitation and Supports the Promotion of “Rashid, the Child of Sinjar” to Strengthen Awareness of the Yazidi Cause
BAMRO Responds to ScreenBox’s Invitation and Supports the Promotion of “Rashid, the Child of Sinjar” to Strengthen Awareness of the Yazidi Cause
Following an official invitation from ScreenBox — a Belgian network specialised in documentary screenings and public debate events — the Belgian Association for Human Rights and Development (BAMRO) announces its contribution to the promotion of the documentary film “Rashid, the Child of Sinjar” through its digital platforms, as part of its ongoing efforts to raise public awareness on human rights and minority issues.
This contribution is made without any organisational partnership or formal agreement with the film’s producers. BAMRO’s involvement is solely in response to ScreenBox’s request to help disseminate information about the screening.
The Yazidis… an Open Wound Still Calling for Justice
Since 2014, the Yazidi community has been the victim of a genocide committed by ISIS, marked by mass killings, forced displacement, the abduction of thousands of women and children, and systematic sexual slavery.
To this day, mass graves continue to be uncovered, thousands remain missing, and Sinjar struggles to rebuild after years of devastation.
The Yazidi cause represents an ongoing international responsibility: memory must remain alive, and justice must be pursued.
BAMRO’s Role in Keeping the Yazidi Tragedy Visible
Through its human rights advocacy work, BAMRO has consistently sought to highlight the suffering of the Yazidi people and defend the rights of survivors.
Hosting Nadia Murad: Yazidi Survivor and UN Goodwill Ambassador
BAMRO had the honour of hosting Nadia Murad, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, survivor of the genocide, and one of the world’s leading voices advocating for victims of conflict-related sexual violence.
Her presence enabled BAMRO to:
-
share her testimony with the public and policymakers
-
highlight the scale of the Yazidi genocide
-
advocate for accountability before international justice
-
support reconstruction efforts in Sinjar
-
strengthen European solidarity with survivors
For BAMRO, the voices of survivors are essential: what is not told fades away.
“Rashid, the Child of Sinjar”… A Film That Carries Memory Forward
The documentary follows Rashid, a young Yazidi survivor of ISIS captivity, as he attempts to rebuild his life in Sinjar amid ongoing insecurity, instability, and the lasting trauma of his past.
The 80-minute film will be screened on Saturday, 29 November, at Palace Cinema in Brussels as part of the Cinemamed Festival, followed by a discussion with director Jasna Krajinovic.
BAMRO’s Contribution
BAMRO commits to:
1. Relaying information about the film
To strengthen public awareness of the Yazidi cause.
2. Supporting cultural initiatives that give voice to minorities
Particularly those that highlight the experiences of survivors of conflict and persecution.
3. Encouraging public dialogue on memory, justice, and resilience
Recognising the essential role of documentary cinema in preserving truth and preventing oblivion.
Conclusion
By promoting this film, BAMRO reaffirms its commitment to human rights, the protection of minorities, and the support of genocide survivors.
The story of Rashid — like that of Nadia Murad — reminds the world that the Yazidi genocide must neither be forgotten nor repeated.
BAMRO invites the public to attend the screening and take part in the post-film discussion as an act of solidarity with the survivors of Sinjar.
